Walking Football Timeline in Scotland
5th December 2012: First recorded game of walking football in Scotland played at Loanhead promoted by Midlothian Ageing Well’s Vivian Wallace who became a Trustee on the board of WFS in 2017, serving for 6 years.
March 2013: Game spreads across the Lothians with groups at Penicuik, Musselburgh and Hibernian Training Centre at East Mains, Tranent
June 2015: First ever national WF tournament/festival organised by AgeScotland and staged at Spartans Community Football Academy in Edinburgh. Foureen teams take part with Hibernian Community Foundation beating Glasgow in the final.
September 2015: Paths for All appoint a Walking Football Development Officer on two year contract.
December 2015: Scottish Walking Football Network created to include representatives of all walking football groups across Scotland.
June 2016: Second national WF tournament supported by Paths for All again at Spartans Academy. 24 teams take part with Montrose Links Trust beating Midlothian Ageing Well in final.
November 2016: Montrose Links Trust represent Scotland in first Home Nations tournament in Hartlepool.
March 2017: Six “ Trustee Board” members elected from representatives of the Scottish Walking Football Network to create a participant-led group tasked with developing walking football across Scotland.
April 2017: Board create Walking Football Scotland and agree National Aims and Objectives.
April 2017: Inaugural WF National League starts at Ravenscraig supported by North Lanarkshire Leisure. 10 teams enter and play monthly through to November.
June 2017: Third national WF tournament organised by Glasgow Life held at Glasgow Green. 32 teams enter with Midlothian Ageing Well winning the final against Gretna. Radio Sportscotland broadcast live from the event with Archie McPherson providing commentary on final game.
September 2017: WFS achieve charitable status and affiliate to Age Scotland. Two additional Trustees appointed to the WFS board.
October 2017: Several Scottish teams compete in international walking football tournament in Vilamoura, Portugal
November 2017: Hearts 56 WF win first ever WF National League at Ravenscraig with Hearts 98 runners up.
December 2017: WFS officially launched at The Stirling Smith Art Gallery & Museum. Website goes live along with Facebook and Twitter accounts. Craig Brown and Rose Reilly appointed as Scottish ambassadors for walking football.
February 2018: Partnership with Cardiac Science Defibrillators announced.
March 2018: Walking Football Scotland win the Age Scotland Jess Barrow Award for Campaigning and Influencing. First Scottish all-women walking football event takes place in Perth involving teams from Montrose and Perth
April 2018: WFS announce Charity partnership with Prostate Cancer UK.
June 2018: 4th Annual National Cup & Festival attracts a record 56 teams and over 500 participants. Gretna beat Ayr United in the final
September 2018: WFS one of the first sports bodies to sign up to SAMH mental health charter.
October 2018: Create new partnership with Drinkaware
November 2018: First ever national tournament for over 65 players. 16 teams enter with Ayr United beating Geriatricks in the final.
November 2018: First WFS Annual General Meeting at Hampden Park
June 2019: 5th Annual National Cup & Festival attracts over 700 participants - largest walking football event in the world to date, made up with 32 teams in the over 50's, 32 teams in the Festival and 8 teams in the newly launched over 65 tournament. Raith Rovers beat Hearts in the over 50 cup and in the over 65 cup Kirkcaldy made it a Fife double when they triumphed on penalties against East Kilbride Geriatricks.
September 2019: WFS Chairman Gary McLaughlin receives UEFA Silver Award for services to football.
December 2019: WFS Chairman Gary McLaughlin wins Sportscotland Local Hero award for services to walking football.
March 2020: Due to world COVID-19 Pandemic all walking football programmes suspended ithroughout Scotland.
May 2021: Walking football recreational sessions gradually resume adhering to Scottish Government/SFA/WFS guidelines
September 2021: Regional leagues at over 50 and 65 launched based at Dundee, Edinburgh, Cumbernauld & Glasgow
November 2021: Gary McLaughlin resigns as WFS Chair and is replaced by David Hyland
March 2022: New competitive regional leagues launched at Over 50, 60, 70 and Womens Over 40.
June 2022: First Scottish Cup since Covid-19 with competitive tournaments including Over 50, 60, 70 and Women’s Over 40. Winners - Pollok Utd (Over 50’s), Townhead Strollers (Over 60’s), Stenhousemuir (Over 70’s), Giffnock SC (Women’s Over 40’s)
June 2022: In partnership with Inverness CT, WFS host the first ever North Region Walking Football Festival at the Highland Rigby Club facility with 10 teams and over 80 players in attendance.
November 2022: Glasgow Life are crowned Over 60’s Champions League winners and will therefore go to Newcastle in May 2023 representing WFS at the EFDN European Tournament
December 2022: Arbroath are crowned Over 50’s Champions League winners at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.
December 2022: New Constitution adopted.
December 2022: David Hyland retires as WFS Chair and becomes Immediate Past President and is replaced by Kenny McLean as President.
December 2022: 2023 regional leagues expanded to over 50, 60, 65, 70 and Women’s over 40 with record amount of entries.
December 2022: Walking Football Scotland become affiliated game leaders of the Scottish FA Para Football board.
January 2023: New updated supplementary Laws of the Game introduced with focus on player safety, thus making all walking football non-contact.
February 2023: Mags Muir (Carnoustie Panmure) becomes first recipient of inaugural Arthur Duncan Annual Memorial Award 2022 winner for outstanding contribution to Walking Football in Scotland.
March 2023: Walking Football Scotland invited to deliver presentation in Seville at the EFDN Annual Conference.
May 2023: Walking Football Scotland become affiliated members of the Scottish FA Para Football board.
May 2023: Brian Sloan and Martin Jack are appointed to the Board of Trustees.
June 2023: Walking Football Scotland announce partnership with new charity partners Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS).
June 2023: Walking Football Scotland are saddened to hear of the passing of our patron Craig Brown CBE. (1940 - 2023)
June 2023: Walking Football Scotland deliver the biggest 1 day walking football event in the world hosting the Scottish Cup and Festival 2023 at Glasgow Green Football Centre with tournaments including Over 50, 60, 65, 70 and Women’s Over 40. Winners - Pollok Utd (Over 50’s), Ayr Utd (Over 60’s), North Lanarkshire Council (Over 65’s), North Lanarkshire Council (Over 70’s), Braehead FC (Women’s Over 40’s) victorious. A total of 76 teams and over 750 players took part with the event sponsored by Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.
July/August 2023: Newly updated Education Workshop delivered in the 6 regions of Scotland to players representing more than half affiliated clubs in Scotland.
September 2023: Walking Football Scotland deliver first ever Referee Education Workshop at Toryglen Regional Football Centre.
October 2023: Walking Football Scotland support first ever Parkinson’s Festival at Toryglen Regional Football Centre, hosted by Glasgow Life and sponsored by Peoples Ford.
November 2023: Giffnock SC Auld Timers are crowned Over 50’s Champions League winners at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.
December 2023: Ayr Utd are crowned Over 60’s Champions League winners at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.
December 2023: Walking Football Scotland announce first ever, Referee Liaison Officer appointment of Simon McLean to support referee development.
December 2023: A Memorandum of Understanding is announced with Football Memories Scotland which will see both organisations work together to enhance and promote offering for members clubs/groups.
January 2024: Walking Football Scotland deliver first ever online Referee Education Workshop with then further in-person workshops resulting in over 40 referees up-skilled in the knowledge of the game and updated supplementary Laws of the Game.
March 2024: WFS Regional Managers are appointed for the commencement of new regional teams whom will take part in a new Regional League Cup
March 2024: Colin Craig (Drumchapel Utd) announced as 2023 winner of the Arthur Duncan Annual Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to Walking Football in Scotland.
March 2024: Annual Members Meeting sees boardroom changes with WFS board now consisting of Kenny McLean, David Hyland, Gordon McAllister, Martin Jack and Matt Ramsay.
March 2024: Partnership announcement made with Parkinson’s UK and Walking Football Scotland, teaming up to grow the offer of Parkinson’s walking football sessions in Scotland with WFS Parkinson’s Educator Drew Wilson also appointed in voluntary role.
March 2024: First ever female referee is appointed to league action with Karin McKenny officiating at WFS O70’s East of Scotland League.
March 2024: Gordon Smith announced as new patron and will support WFS alongside fellow patron, Rose Reilly MBE.
March 2024: Walking Football Scotland announce partnership with Hampden Sports Clinic giving the opportunity of all players from our 150 affiliated members across Scotland, given access to the clinic’s facilities and professional assistance where necessary from their specialist team.
June 2024: Walking Football Scotland again break records and deliver the biggest 1 day walking football event in the world hosting the Scottish Cup and Festival 2024 at Glasgow Green Football Centre with tournaments including Over 50, 60, 65, 70 and Women’s Over 40 and Over 50’s. Winners - Saint Anthony’s (Over 50’s), Hearts (Over 60’s), Ayr Utd (Over 65’s), Stenhousemuir (Over 70’s), Braehead FC (Women’s Over 40’s), Rangers FFIT (Women’s Over 50’s) victorious. A total of 84 teams and over 800 players took part with the event sponsored by Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.
September 2024: Hearts 56’ are crowned Over 60’s East of Scotland Premiership Champions whilst Oriam - Whites are winners of the East of Scotland Championship.
September 2024: Walking Football Scotland announce partnership with RJM Sports Ltd. and German manufacturer, Uhlsport with club shop available.
September 2024: First ever Regional competition takes place with WFS Regional teams at Oriam National Performance Centre with all various age category competitions to follow.
October 2024: Alloa Athletic are crowned Over 65’s East of Scotland Premiership Champions and North Lanarkshire Council are crowned Over 65’s West of Scotland Champions. Whereas, Motherwell FC CT are O50’s West of Scotland Premiership Champions and Carrick WFC win O50’s West Championship. Dundee East CSC are O50’s East of Scotland Premiership Champions and Forfar 1298 win O50’s East Championship.
