ARTHUR DUNCAN AWARD 2024

𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐇𝐔𝐑 𝐃𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐔𝐀𝐋 𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐃 2024

’𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑶𝒖𝒕𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝑾𝒂𝒍𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒏 𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒕𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅’

Arthur Duncan became involved in walking football in 2015 when the Healthy Hearts Club at Stirling Sports Village formed the basis of a new group. From his first taste of walking football, Arthur was a fervent supporter of the social playing sessions and how it contributed to the society and camaraderie of participants. Arthur was also a very talented man and, along with ex-Chair, Gary McLaughlin, he created the WFS logo, later assigning copyright over the logo to Walking Football Scotland.

In his role as a graphic artist and his various roles in the community, Arthur was always extremely busy designing leaflets, programmes, strip graphics and the like and in that role he made a massive contribution to Walking Football Scotland. Locally, promotional items were produced with regularity, but arguably his most noteworthy work will be the design of the WFS logo based around his beloved saltire. The logo will endure for many years as a physical reminder of his contribution to walking football in Scotland.

In 2022, in recognition of Arthur’s contribution, Walking Football Scotland launched the annual Arthur Duncan Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to walking football, locally and among the community. The inaugural winner was Mags Muir of Carnoustie Panmuir and 2023 winner was Colin Craig from Drumchapel Utd.

We are hereby inviting member club representatives and regional representatives to submit nominations for the Arthur Duncan Memorial Award 2024. We are seeking nominations of an individual who the representative believes fits this role. The proposal should be no more than 200 words long and should describe why the representative believes that their nominated individual should receive this award.

Nominations are open from today until noon on Friday 13th December and should be emailed to president@walkingfootballscotland.org

The successful nominee will be invited to the WFS AMM, or an event that suits them, to receive the award.

North Lanarkshire Council - Hampden Park Tour

Through the support of our partnership with Scottish Football Museum and Football Memories Scotland, North Lanarkshire Council were the latest club to enjoy a visit to our National Stadium for a tour of Hampden Park and Museum.

Walking Football in the North Lanarkshire has grown over a number of years and it was great to see the group come together to enjoy the Hampden Park experience.

The group enjoyed their tour and a kick about in the warm up area, before plenty of time reminiscing around the Hampden Museum.

We thank our friends at Hampden Museum and Football Memories Scotland for another enjoyable day and if any other clubs are looking for a similar experience, please contact Matt Ramsay at matt@walkingfootballscotland.org

Menopause Investigation - Dr Laura Wallace

Menopause and Walking Football: a qualitative exploration of the experiences of female players in Scotland

On behalf of Dr Laura Wallace from University of West of Scotland we share a new investigation into menopause and walking football.

Are you currently going, or have you recently gone, through the menopause? Are / were you participating in walking football?

If so, Laura would love to hear from  you!

As a walking footballer, with a keen interest in women's health, she is hoping to explore the experiences of female players of menopausal age, to understand any potential impact one may have on the other. The study will involve taking part in an informal online focus group, where you will be able to discuss your experiences with other female players.

All ages and abilities are welcome, whether playing competitively and / or recreationally. It also does not matter to what extent, if any, that you experience(d) menopause symptoms. No identifying information will be shared beyond the group itself.

Please see below Participant Information Sheet for more information, and email laura.wallace@uws.ac.uk, with any queries / to sign up. Thank you!

Reason for the study

With a few exceptions, all women will experience the menopause, and for some this brings a range of symptoms. With evidence of a negative relationship between menopause symptoms and wellbeing, and the positive benefits associated with physical activity – with specific reference to team activities – and wellbeing, this study aims to investigate the experiences of female walking footballers, to find how the sport may influence their experience of the menopause.

What is involved in the study?

You will be involved inn online focus group of around eight female walking football players. The focus group will be led by the researcher, who will record the discussion with your consent, before using the information to make suggestions that will hopefully provide recommendations that can help other women negotiate the menopause. These discussions will be arranged at a time and date that suits you.

Confidentiality

All information provided in the discussion will be kept confidential, and anonymised for any presentation of results. When sharing findings, all players will be given a pseudonym, with any other identifying information removed or altered.

Risks

I see little risk involved in taking part in this study, although I understand menopause can be a sensitive topic, and you only have to contribute as much as you feel comfortable sharing. At the focus group there will also be information available that can provide further support about going through the menopause.

Right to withdraw

If you choose to take part in this study, you have the right to withdraw at any time, and do not have to give any reason for doing so. This can be done by emailing laura.wallace@uws.ac.uk. Once the focus groups have begun, any recordings will not be able to be withdrawn, however it will remain confidential.

Further information

If you have any queries, do not hesitate to contact Laura Wallace at the email address above. If you wish to make a complaint, please contact Nick Sculthorpe, nicholas.sculthorpe@uws.ac.uk. Chair of research, Division of Sport, Health & Exercise, Professor Nick Sculthorpe.

Players of the Month (October) - Jenny Hammond & John Conroy

We’re keeping up with our monthly spotlight on Walking Football Scotland Players of the Month!

For October, in partnership with CHSS, the Walking Football Scotland Women’s Player of the Month is Jenny Hammond! Jenny, 48, plays with Linlithgow Rose.

Walking Football Scotland Men’s Player of the Month is John Conroy! John, 68, plays with Dumbarton.

Congratulations Jenny and John! They shared their reflections on what Walking Football means to them.

Why did you get involved in walking football?

Jenny: “I played a bit of casual football when I was at college and really enjoyed it, so when our local club posted on social media that they were starting a Ladies section I thought I would go along and give it a try.  I had a great time at the first session and have continued to play and support the club as the Ladies section has grown from just two of us at the very first session, to over 30 regular players and 3 competitive teams.”

John: “I went down to watch it one night and I was very surprised by the standard. I loved playing and felt this would be a good chance to get fit and stay fit but it has given me a new set of friends and has made a huge difference in my life physically, mentally and socially.”

What positive impact has walking football had on your life?

Jenny: “It has been great to develop new skills, especially learning something new slightly later in life; the coaches have been really encouraging and I have gradually built my confidence and ability in playing.  It is really enjoyable and a great way to switch off from work or the stresses of the day. I regularly attend 3 sessions a week, playing alongside men and ladies of all ages and have met lots of new people and made some great friends through the club.”

John: “For me it has been an excellent way to improve my own mental health and reduce stress. Every time I step on the pitch, you soon forget about the stresses of the day and simply enjoy kicking a ball again.

It’s like being back playing when you were young!”

What would you say to encourage others to come along?

Jenny: “I would definitely say to give it a try!  Don’t worry if you haven’t played before or if you can’t commit to coming along every week. We have players of all abilities come along to our sessions and even those totally new to football get playing and get the hang of the matches surprisingly quickly.  Similarly, if you have played before and are not sure about the idea of football without the running, you will likely be surprised at just how challenging and enjoyable it can be.”

John: “Come along and try it! It’s great fun and you get to meet new friends!”
